What This Does

Canva's AI tools help you create professional, visually clear patient preparation handouts — colorful one-pagers that patients actually read, instead of dense text documents they ignore.

Before You Start

• Free Canva account at canva.com (AI features included in free tier)
• Your plain-language prep instructions (use the Level 1 "Create a Patient Education Handout" prompt first to draft the text content)
• A few minutes to select colors and fonts

Steps

1. Sign in to Canva and choose a template

Go to canva.com, click "Create a design," and search for "medical flyer" or "health handout." Or choose "A4 Document" for a standard printable size. Select a clean, professional template with minimal color and readable font.

What you should see: A gallery of medical/health-themed templates with text placeholder areas. Troubleshooting: If templates look too decorative, search "simple medical" or "clean health information."

2. Use Magic Write to draft your text content

Click any text block in the template, then look for the Magic Write option (usually appears when you click a text area, or find it under the "+" Apps section). Type your request: "Write a brief, friendly preparation guide for patients having a fasting blood draw. Include: no eating after midnight, water is fine, bring insurance card and ID, expect a 15-minute visit."

What you should see: AI-generated text appears in the text block, formatted to fit.

3. Replace placeholder text with your content

Delete all the template placeholder text and replace with your AI-drafted (and physician-reviewed) content. Use short bullet points — aim for no more than 6-8 points per section.

4. Adjust the visual design

Keep it simple:

• Use your practice colors if you know them (click any colored element → "Edit style" → enter your hex color code)
• Increase font size to 14pt minimum for body text (patients often read these in dim exam rooms)
• Add your practice name and phone number at the bottom
• Add a simple icon or image by searching Canva's free library ("medical," "doctor," "health checkup")

5. Download and print

Click "Share" → "Download" → "PDF Print" for high-quality printing. Or download as PNG to attach to a portal message.
